In 2010, Jaqi Clements gave birth to a beautiful pair of identical twins. While every mother believes that her children are the most gorgeous kids in the world, Jaqi might have actually been right! Jaqi realized early on that her children were extraordinarily beautiful and it wasn’t long before she was sharing pictures of them with the rest of the world. By chance, her Instagram account managed to go viral and the rest has become pop-culture history. Let’s get to meet these two twins and their extraordinary family!
A Surprise to be Sure
Jaqi and Kevin Clements were like any other young couple dealing with a pregnancy. The Clements family already had a two-year-old son named Chase, but they were eager to expand their family. Only, they didn’t realize that Jaqi’s pregnancy was about to count for two! When they heard that they were having twins, the entire family was thrilled!
A Loving Family
Jaqi and Kevin Clements were ecstatic to learn their expectancy of twins. “After trying for so many years, we were just overcome with joy to be blessed with not one but two miracles from heaven,” Jaqi says. The baby girls would arrive just in time for fall, which was nothing short of amazing for Jaqi and Kevin.
Loving the Attention
To say that Jaqi and Kevin were thrilled would have been an understatement. It wasn’t long before Jaqi was putting together dream outfits for her girls. The Clements were clearly thrilled by the news but they realized that their life was about to change.
Right on Time
“It was as if the stork was telling us how much he regarded our strong desire and perseverance to start our family,” Kevin says. “To give birth to twin girls just in time for autumn was just … Let’s just say that the leaves would fall differently for us extra this season.”
July 7, 2010
As if the news could not get any better, Kevin and Jaqi’s twins arrived early. “They were expected to come in around August or September,” Jaqi reveals. “The girls, however, came just three days after Independence Day.” How much better could things get? Not only did the Clements have gifts underneath the Christmas tree for themselves and the girls, but they could take the little ones home and open the presents for an unwrapping like no other this year.
Changing their Lives
“We were on Cloud Nine because of how things turned out,” Kevin says. “Our excitement monitor reached the highest level after taking one look at the girls.” Not only were the twins, named Ava Marie and Leah Rose by their adoring parents, born at the right time, but they were absolutely beautiful.
Fit for Royalty
“Every baby is beautiful,” Jaqi says. “But our kids were simply breath-taking,” she adds. “Ava and Leah were the perfect mixture of their parents with every feature crafted to absolute … well, absolute perfection!”
A Growing Family
While the Clements were more than thrilled to add to their family, they knew that their lives were about to get much more difficult. After all, raising a single daughter is hard — but raising identical twins? Jaqi knew from early on that she wanted her children to model, but she knew that they were young and she had to approach the concept carefully.
Kevin and Jaqi were not the only ones who noticed Ava and Leah’s incredible beauty. The nurses and even the doctor himself acknowledged the twins’ absolutely gorgeous looks. “I’ve delivered my share of kids over the years,” says the doctor who delivered the twins. “These girls, however, made me stop and take another look. Ava and Leah were two of the most beautiful babies I have seen in a while, and I’ve been in this practice for upwards of twenty years.”
A Pretty Family
Family members also noticed the girls’ stunning looks. “When Jaqi and Kevin brought them home, I was at a loss for words,” says the girls’ grandmother. “I knew they would be beautiful. I mean, my side of the family does not have bad-looking genes. Ava and Leah, however, were beyond plain beauty. The girls bore physical appeals that were model-worthy.”
Ava and Leah were both outgoing right from the beginning. They loved to show off in front of their family and they even liked to dance for their friends and neighbors. It was clear to see that Ava and Leah were made to be the center of attention.
The Modeling Dream Begins
Model-worthy indeed! Several family members suggested Kevin and Jaqi get the girls in the fashion industry as baby models. “Gerber Baby has nothing on these girls,” one family member exclaimed. Kevin and Jaqi, however, wanted their children to enjoy normalcy at the tender ages of six months to two-years-old. “We weren’t saying that we would never introduce the girls to the industry,” Jaqi explains. “We just didn’t want to do it so fast. Ava and Leah’s beauty wasn’t going anywhere.”
Hesitant to Begin
For her part, Jaqi was unsure as to whether or not she wanted to pursue the modeling world for her children. After all, everyone has heard horror stories about children being stifled by their parent’s enthusiasm. In order for Jaqi to allow her children to do Instagram modeling, they had to want to do it for themselves. After all, Ava and Leah could wait to grow older and even prettier.
The last statement was certainly true. The girls only became more beautiful as the years progressed. It was at around five-years-old that Kevin and Jaqi realized that they were truly onto something. “Ava and Leah just kept getting more pretty as the days passed. So we asked the girls, ‘Do you think you may want to take pictures for a professional photographer?’ They jumped up and down while saying, ‘Yes!’”
Beginning of a Blog
Like all parents in the digital age, Jaqi and Kevin were quick to embrace the internet for their children’s modeling dreams. It wouldn’t be long before Jaqi had set up an online blog to record all of their modeling shots.
Ava and Leah went to their first session with so much excitement that Jaqi grew nervous. “I thought that they were going to give the photographer too much energy and he, in turn, would end the session early. I thought, ‘Oh my god. My babies are going to experience rejection at an early age because of me. What have I done?’”
While Jaqi had her own dreams of stardom for her children, she knew that the path had to be walked very carefully. As a result, Jaqi was more than happy to start slow. Jaqi turned to her neighbors for clothing to model and the twins were ecstatic at the opportunity.
Jaqi had, indeed, altered the girls’ lives, though not in the way she thought. “They were naturals onset,” the mom exclaims. “Ava and Leah followed instructions so well that the photographer gave me his card and a few of his connections in the industry. ‘They are natural beautifies from the inside out,’ he said. I just beamed and said, ‘I know! They get it from their mom!’”
Learning from Mistakes
While Ava and Leah showed clear signs of skill in front of the camera, they weren’t quite perfect as of yet. Who could blame them? The children tried their best and the photographer loved them, but there were still ways that the girls could improve. Becoming a storied Instagram model doesn’t just happen overnight!
Retaining a Normal Childhood
Of course, with fame comes the need for balance. Such is the reason why Jaqi and Kevin work to ensure that their girls lead normal lives. “Ava and Leah have an older brother,” Jaqi says. “They do not get passes at home. When it is time for chores, everyone, including the girls, participates. We want to make sure that he, their older brother, doesn’t feel left out in the mix and that the girls understand the importance of humbleness.”
Birth of an Instagram Account
By this point in time, Ava and Leah had both been submitted to numerous modeling agencies. In order to fill up their portfolio while waiting, Jaqi turned to Instagram. Jaqi set up an account in order to start sharing pictures that they had captured on their own. This was the first real introduction to the digital world that the Clement Twins received!
Ava and Leah certainly know what it means to have fun. “We have a standing appointment with the beach,” Kevin says. “The girls look forward to getting in their bathing suits and stepping out on the sand. They even bring their buckets to dig and build sand castles.”
Growing a Digital Following
Jaqi and Kevin were astounded by how quickly the social media world responded to the twins. Within a few days, Ava and Leah were basically Instagram stars. Agencies from all over the country were reaching out to Jaqi and Kevin in order to sign their children. Could it really be this easy?
Being A Good Mom
With all of the notoriety that has come the girls’ way over the years, some may wonder if Kevin and Jaqi regret introducing their daughters to the fashion industry at such young ages. “Absolutely not,” Jaqi says with confidence. “I was not that mother who just thrust her daughters into an industry that thrives off rejection,” she explains. “I asked the girls if this was something that they wanted to do, and they said yes. Even today, if Ava and Leah were to say, ‘Mommy, we don’t want to do this anymore,’ I would not object. My job as a mom is to protect them always.”
Social Media Stars
All of the attention that Jaqi’s children were getting helped their social media account to blow up. Within months, the Clements twins had thousands of followers. It was clear that new professional headshots were in order!
By this point in time, it was clear that Jaqi and Kevin were dealing with a potential career. The new headshots had gone over amazingly. Now, Jaqi was looking down at an Instagram following north of 15,000 people. By the time that Jaqi checked again, their follower count had risen to 25,000!
Being young social media superstars can be a lot of fun, but it can also be dangerous. Jaqi and Kevin rolled the idea of hiring bodyguards around for a little bit before deciding against it. “Not quite yet,” Kevin says. “We are considering it for the future, though, as the girls enter teen years. You can never be too careful with the Internet circulating pictures of the girls to god knows who.”
Learning What Works
There is an art to crafting a social media following on Instagram. Jaqi soon realized that their followers loved shots with the twins together. Additionally, she came to realize that pictures which emphasized their pretty blue eyes were always the most popular.
Relying on Brother
Through it all, young Chase became a rock of steadiness. “Their brother is quite the protector, though,” Jaqi adds. “He will not let you get to close to his sisters, which is great. There’s really that dynamic between the three of them that I hope will be unbreakable in the years ahead.” Rather than growing jealous, Chase embraced his role in the new family dynamic.
Signing With An Agency
At some point, Jaqi and Kevin knew that they had to sign off with an agency. Jaqi called the process of singling out an agency ‘difficult’ and she was hesitant to make a final decision. This was the future of their family, so Jaqi knew that she had to make the right choice. Eventually, Jaqi decided to sign with two California-based agencies: Zuri Model & Talent and DreamRay Model & Talent.
A Slight Mistake
Jaqi didn’t know that she wasn’t allowed to sign with multiple agencies. Soon, her twins were booked by both agencies for the same Barbie audition. Did this mean that her twins were going to get fired? She quickly called up both agencies in order to explain her confusion. Thankfully, they forgave the gaffe and allowed her to move forward with both agencies.
Chase Joins the Fun
While Chase had been just fine watching his sisters become stars, soon he was chomping at the bit to try modeling out for himself. Chase decided to jump into the career-path by getting his own Instagram account, Cut2ThisChase. Chase’s account quickly grew to almost 12,000 followers!
A Healthy & Happy Family
Jaqi and Kevin had always tried to live their lives in healthy, fun, and fit ways. Kevin and Jaqi had employed an active and health-based lifestyle ever since they got together. It wasn’t long before the kids were joining in on the fun.
More Than Models
While modeling has definitely made up a huge part of their life, it isn’t all that there is to it. Here, we see Kevin and Chase sharing their mutual love of football. Kevin believes that athletics can be a great bonding tool for Chase and himself.
While Chase and Kevin go to the game, Jaqi loves to take her girls out for shopping trips. True to form, the twins love to get their nails done while going shopping. Jaqi loves to let her children get away from the modeling game for a while. It’s important for them to have balance, after all.
Sharing the Spotlight
While Jaqi is perfectly fine with her children stealing the spotlight, she occasionally lets herself in on the action. Jaqi makes it abundantly clear that her role is that of a manager, but who can argue with the results?
While Ava and Leah largely get only positive remarks from their fans, some responses have been negative. One of the most common complaints from viewers revolves around Jaqi giving her children makeup at such a young age. Jaqi argues that the makeup is light and integral to the industry.
While Jaqi knows that her children are ecstatic, some people have tried to argue otherwise. These cynics have cited the serious modeling portraits that Jaqi posts on their social media accounts. Of course, serious poses are intrinsic to the modeling industry. Jaqi assures everyone that the children are thrilled.
Next Big Thing
In 2017, Leah and Ava were considered one of the biggest rising stars in the industry. They had been featured in numerous magazines and had modeled a variety of prominent clothing brands. It is clear that their star is only beginning to rise.
What Comes Next
With children, it can be impossible to chart what they’ll want to do in a year. For now, however, one thing is for certain: Ava and Leah are definitely beautiful girls.
The Origins of Memorial Day in America: Rooted in a History of Former Slaves and Bravery
Memorial Day is widely celebrated in the United States, as a way to remember the heroism and sacrifice of those fallen American soldiers. The day has become a time of celebration and community gatherings. With parades, food, and fireworks., it’s just like July 4th. But, while we all know the origins of other American holidays (including the 4th of July), Memorial Day is still shrouded in lost and misunderstood history. The full story is not known, and it’s quite a tale!
Who Invented Memorial Day?
The first acknowledged Memorial Day is linked with the tragic loss of life in Charleston, South Carolina that took place toward the end of the Civil War. Hundreds of Union soldiers were left for dead at the Washington Race Course, a makeshift prisoner-of-war camp by the Confederate side. With Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s abrupt surrender at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, on April 9, 1865. The war had taken a brutal toll on both sides, but the end of the war inspired a mass exodus of Charleston by soldiers and citizens alike. Former slaves stayed behind. Inspired by patriotic fervor, they called themselves the “Patriotic Association of Colored Men.” They took it upon themselves to bring honor and dignity to the fallen soldiers left in the race-course prison in unmarked graves when the Confederate soldiers fled.
They excavated the unmarked mass graves and then dug 257 individual graves, surrounded by a fence to ensure a place of honor and security. Once their final memorial was complete, the community turned out for “Decoration Day,” which is now recognized by many as the first Memorial Day, in 1865. The event included the march on the race track, singing by 2,800 black school children, preaching by black ministers, and the wide-spread decoration of the graves. It was a way to honor the soldiers, who’d been viewed as martyrs by the Patriotic Association of Colored Men.
The Rest is History
Tragic loss and sacrifice are at the center of virtually every version of the first Memorial Day celebrations, but the scale is important. The Decoration Day tradition was later launched in Waterloo, New York (and yes, they claim to have invented the first Memorial Day). Memorial celebrations for Confederate soldiers took place in April 1866, and then Union Major General John A. Logan declared May 5, 1868, to be Decoration Day. There are a number of conflicting reports and claims for the events and meaning of the commemorations that took place following the cessation of hostilities at the end of the Civil War. But that last event took place at Arlington National Cemetery. The formalization of the event at Arlington, with the mass decoration of graves with flowers and flags, is part of why the 1868 event is widely considered to be the first national Memorial Day event in US History.
Memorial Day was then set as a May 30th national holiday, and it has continued to evolve. The true history of the day is complicated by historical bias and the fickle memories of the participants, but the role of these men and women who had once been slaves is important. After all, the Emancipation Proclamation, issued on January 1, 1863, was just a few years old when the war ended. Former slaves signed up to become Union soldiers en masse. An estimated 25,000 soldiers fought for the Union Army, but approximately 10% of their ranks were former slaves. They fought bravely and with distinction. In fact, 16 black soldiers were awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for their heroism in battle. It’s about time that we recognized the hidden stories that have for so long gone untold.
